Do senior drivers in Ontario still have to pass a written test?

No written test is required for senior drivers to renew their licenses in Ontario, Canada, as of 2015. The renewal process includes a brief screening exercise that measures the driver’s cognitive capabilities.

The screening exercise involves drawing a clock to indicate a capacity to recognize and organize information and cancelling letters in a diagram to indicate the ability to coordinate thought with action. Senior drivers must also pass a vision test and take part in a 45-minute education session to learn about new laws and tips for older drivers.

Depending on the outcome, drivers may also be required to pass a road test and submit medical information before renewing their licenses. Senior drivers in Ontario must renew their licenses every two years once they turn 80.
