What are senna pods used for?

Senna pods and leaves of the senna plant are formulated into stimulant laxatives and used for treating constipation. One of the most popular laxatives is Senokot, which is available in two strengths. The pods are sometimes also used to brew a bitter-tasting tea that has a laxative effect.

A normal dose of sennoside B, derived from senna pods and leaves, is 20 to 30 milligrams daily. The tea formulation generally provides a dose of 0.5 to 2 grams per 1/2 or 1 teaspoon. Experts do not recommend the use of senna laxatives for long term use, and their use is not recommended in people with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis or intestinal obstructions.
