Women and men use the same body mass index charts, according to Obesity Action Coalition. An adult with a BMI of 30 or greater is considered obese, and an adult with a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is at a healthy weight, states the Harvard School of Public Health.
The BMI, which is a good indicator of too much body fat, represents the ratio of a person's weight to height squared, explains the Harvard School of Public Health. This ratio is calculated by dividing the person's weight in pounds by height in inches, dividing the result by height in inches and then multiplying the result by 703.
