After a perm, it is advisable to wait at least 48 hours before shampooing the hair. Permed hair is fragile after undergoing this chemical process, and waiting to wash the hair gives it a chance to adjust. It is best to use shampoo and conditioner designed for chemically treated hair.

Shampoos designed for chemically treated hair use gentler ingredients than those found in traditional shampoos, which can be overly harsh for the delicate permed hair. After washing, always condition permed hair. Avoid blow drying the hair unless using a diffuser on a cool setting. Also avoid using a comb for the first 24 hours following a perm.
