SharePoint is a Microsoft application that lets users work in an online environment to share files, work collaboratively and synchronize work productivity among multiple users. The basic SharePoint Foundation is free to use privately, but there are several paid versions, such as SharePoint Standard, SharePoint Enterprise and Office 365.
SharePoint was developed in 2001, and as of November 2014, the most recent version is SharePoint 2013. It is commonly used by large companies to manage large amounts of web content securely using sites, wikis, and lists. It is compatible with the Microsoft Office Suite, and the next version is scheduled for release in 2014, according to Microsoft.
