Shellbark hickory (Carya laciniosa) is a leafy tree native to the eastern United States. It grows 60 to 80 feet tall with a trunk that is 3 to 4 inches in diameter.

The nuts of the shellbark hickory tree are the largest of all of the hickory nuts and are edible for humans. The wood of the shellbark hickory is considered strong, durable and flexible. It is a popular material for the wooden handles of tools due to its study, malleable nature. The height of the tree, along with the leaf pattern, makes the shellbark hickory a useful shade tree.
