What is a shooting star hydrangea?

Shooting star hydrangeas are in the lacecap group of Hydrangea macrophylla, a classification of flowers that have flattened flower heads. The flowers are shaped like a star and are pure white in color.

If shooting star hydrangeas are grown on the coast, they can tolerate full sunlight. Plants that are grown in areas where the afternoons are warm can tolerate partial shade. The flowers need rich, porous soil to grow. Soil that has been mixed with compost or peat moss is ideal. The hydrangeas have to be irrigated regularly throughout the growing season, but plants that are grown in coastal areas can survive on less water once they are established.
