All new tattoos need special care during the first few weeks. In order to properly care for your new tattoo you need antibacterial soap and water, a vitamin-enriched or antibacterial ointment, and 30 SPF sunscreen.
Keep the bandage in place
If your tattoo artist has put a bandage on your new tattoo, leave it alone for a minimum of 2 hours to help prevent infection.
Keep your tattoo clean and dry
Don't use a washcloth or abrasive material to clean your tattoo. Use your hand and antibacterial soap. Don't rub to dry the area. Pat dry with a clean towel.
Treat any scabbing or peeling
Warm compresses can be used to soften scabs and reduce peeling. In addition, antibiotic ointment can be used to help reduce peeling and scabbing. Neosporin, however, is not recommended for tattoos.
Refrain from swimming or bathing
It's okay to take a shower or get your tattoo wet, but don't submerge it in water for prolonged periods of time. Do not take baths or go swimming for 2 to 3 weeks.
Protect your tattoo from the sun
From here on out, use sunscreen to protect your tattoo during long periods in the sun. The minimum protection recommended is 30 SPF.
