Should you change your credit card number if you lose your card?

In order to limit financial liability after losing a credit card, it is important to cancel the card immediately, reports Nerd Wallet. Cardholders are not liable for expenditures made after cancellation of their cards.

As of 2015, federal law limits a cardholder's liability to $50 for purchases made with a lost or stolen credit card before the cardholder reports the card lost or stolen. Some individual card issuers limit liability further and do not charge cardholders for any unauthorized purchases, states Nerd Wallet.

The cardholder should also contact TransUnion, Equifax, or Experian and place a fraud alert on his credit report upon discovering that a card is missing, states IdentityHawk.
