When should men have their first colonoscopy?

The American Cancer Society recommends that screening for colon and rectal cancer should begin for men at age 50. One method of screening is a colonoscopy but there are other methods available.

Depending on the individual's family history, a doctor may recommend that screening begin earlier than age 50. A colonoscopy is one of the best ways to detect colorectal cancer and is recommended every 10 years, unless family or medical history suggests a higher risk of cancer. Studies have suggested that men should begin regular screening at age 45, as they are more likely to have developed advanced polyps, which can lead to colorectal cancer.
