People with type 2 diabetes do not have to avoid milk, according to the American Diabetes Association. It is a good source of calcium, vitamin D and protein. The ADA recommends skim or 1 percent milk.

Milk has more calories and carbohydrates than other recommended drinks such as unsweetened tea and diet soda, states the ADA. Milk should be consumed in moderate amounts, because it has the potential to affect weight and glucose levels. However, commercial chocolate milk should be avoided because of high levels of sugar, Everyday Health advises. People with diabetes who do not care for milk or are lactose intolerant can substitute fortified soy, rice or almond milk, suggests the ADA.
