How often should you get an oil change?

Most auto manufacturers recommended changing the oil in a vehicle every 5,000, 7,500 or 10,000 miles. Oil changes have been done traditionally every 3,000 miles, but is no longer recommended due to technological advances in engine oil.
Changing a vehicle's oil every 3,000 miles is often recommended by dealer service departments and oil changing stations. Experts believe this is to ensure more business and partly due to most owners incorrectly using the guidelines in the vehicle manual for extreme driving conditions. High-grade synthetic motor oils can often last longer than traditional oil, and the interval between oil changes for synthetic uses is often over 10,000 miles.
