How often should a car have an oil change?

Most car makers recommend having the oil changed every 3,000 miles. Manufacturers of some 2013 and newer models, however, recommend changing the oil between 7,500 and 10,000 miles.
Higher-quality oil and better-performing engines reduce the need for frequent oil changes, but changing the oil every 3,000 miles is still promoted as a safety measure. The lower mile-change recommendation helps drivers avoid waiting too long to have the oil changed in their cars. By treating the 3,000 mile oil change schedule as a loose reminder, even drivers missing the deadline by a few thousand miles can feel safe in knowing that their oil has been changed before the engine is at risk of incurring damage.
