Fire ant blisters should not be popped, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. The blisters should be washed with soap and water. If a blister breaks, it needs to be cleaned again with soap and water to prevent infection.
A fire ant sting begins with a hive-like bump that appears quickly but goes away within an hour, explains the ACAAI. However, a blister develops at the site inside of four hours. After eight to 24 hours, the blister looks like it is full of pus. In reality, the substance is simply dead tissue. Infection is uncommon unless the blister opens.
