How often should you replace your pillow?

Pillows should be replaced every six months or two years, depending on their material. Some gel and foam pillows have a longer life expectancy, and most mattresses have a life span of 5 to 10 years.

Replacing pillows twice annually may prevent potential health problems that interfere with breathing. Replace pillows with the purchase of new bedding, because old pillows harbor dust mites, bed bugs, oil, sweat and foul odors. Dust mites cause upper respiratory problems and allergies, bed bugs are biting insects and oil and sweat contribute to acne. Similarly, wash and dry pillowcases frequently to remove these contaminants.
