The vaccine for pneumonia can be given to seniors at any time of the year, explains WebMD. Seniors are urged to get two pneumonia shots, Pneumovax and Prevnar 13.

If getting both vaccines, seniors should receive the Prevnar 13 vaccine first, according to WebMD. The Pneumovax vaccine should follow eight weeks later. If the person has already received the Pneumovax vaccine within the year, he should wait a year before receiving the Prevnar 13 vaccine. Pneumovax protects individuals from 23 strains of Streptococcus pneumonia bacteria. Prevnar 13, which used to only be given to infants and toddlers, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for adults over the age of 50 in 2011.
