When should you start your Social Security benefits?

Social Security Benefits should begin at either full retirement age or between the ages of 62 and 70, according to the Social Security Administration. If started early, benefits are reduced based on the number of months before full retirement age and the year of birth.
The amount of benefits received depends on the age you start receiving them, explains the SSA. If a person waits until full retirement age, none of the benefits are reduced. In 2015, the full retirement age is 67 years old for anyone born after 1960, and 65 years old for anyone born in 1937 or earlier.
