How often should you walk your dog?

The ASPCA suggests that dogs should be walked at a brisk pace for at least 30 minutes daily. Young dogs, between 6 and 18 months of age, and dogs from active outdoor breeds need more exercise to be happy and healthy.
Dogs require exercise for many of the same reasons people do: to keep healthy, to improve digestion, to provide mental stimulation, and to provide an outlet for physical energy. Dogs that do not get enough exercise are likely to become overweight or obese; they are also likely to develop problem behaviors such as digging, unruliness and excessive barking. Veterinarians can suggest an exercise program suitable for an individual dog's needs.
