How is a shower faucet stem changed?

A shower stem can be replaced by turning the water off and removing the existing stem. Basic tools such as a screwdriver and wrench are needed.

The homeowner can save a lot of money by replacing a leaky shower stem instead of calling a plumber.

  1. Turn off the water
    2. Disconnect the main water line and run the faucet to clear out any water.
  2. Remove the faucet
    3. Using a screwdriver, pop the disc off from around the faucet and remove the screw that becomes visible.
  3. Replace the stem
    4. With a wrench, remove the two bolts holding the stem in place and remove the stem. Replace it with the new stem and put the bolts back on.
  4. Put the faucet back
    5. Screw the faucet back in and replace the disc. Turn the water on and test the stem.
