The Siberian desert is in the Trans-Baikal Region of Russia, about 300 miles east of Lake Baikal. The desert is in the tundra of Russia, a cold, dry, flat region with minimal tree growth. It is located between the Kodar and Udokan mountain ranges, near the border shared with China.
The Russian Geographical Society notes that the desert is only approximately 7 miles long by 3 miles wide. The closest population center is the district capital of Chara, which is about four miles from the desert. Tourist excursions into the desert generally begin in Chara. Though there are no paved roads, the Siberian desert can be accessed on foot, horseback or by off-road vehicle.
