Fort Polk is in Vernon Parish, Louisiana, located seven miles from the city of Leesville. The Army base is 50 miles from the nearest airport, located in Alexandria, Louisiana, and just over 60 miles from Lake Charles.
Fort Polk began operation in 1941 and was originally used to train soldiers for combat during World War II. The Army's Joint Readiness Training Center relocated to Fort Polk in 1993. The JRTC, the Army's premier training facility, acts as the force that mobilizes, validates, deploys and redeploys active, National Guard and Army Reserve forces. As of 2015, Fort Polk is the only actively growing U.S. Army facility.
