Symptoms of low potassium, or hypokalemia, include tiredness, weakness, and cramping in the leg or arm muscles, according to eMedicineHealth. Other symptoms include constipation, numbness, tingling, vomiting and nausea. Low potassium levels may cause excessive urination, heart palpitations, bloating and fainting due to low blood pressure.
Chronic abuse of laxatives or use of diuretics are common causes of hypokalemia, as noted by eMedicineHealth. Kidney disorders, leukemia, Cushing’s disease and magnesium deficiency may also be to blame. Malnutrition or decreased intake of food due to bulimia or anorexia or as a result of bariatric surgery sometimes leads to low potassium levels in the blood.
