The Mint Julep is the signature drink of the Kentucky Derby. Using a simple recipe of sugar, water, mint, and bourbon, anyone can enjoy the Derby experience without travelling to Louisville for the race.

Add four mint leaves, 1 teaspoon of sugar and a splash of water to a glass. Gently muddle these ingredients until they make a consistent paste. Fill the glass with crushed ice. Add 2 ounces of bourbon to the glass and stir until the glass is well frosted. Garnish with a mint leaf and serve. To add to the experience, compose these cocktails in silver Derby tumblers instead of standard highball glasses.

If the Mint Juleps are intended for a larger crowd, make a larger batch by creating a mint simple syrup ahead of time. Simply add 2 cups of sugar to 2 cups of boiling water. Once the sugar dissolves, add six to eight sprigs of mint to the solution and store in a water-tight container overnight. When it comes time to create the actual Mint Juleps, fill each glass with crushed ice. Add 1 tablespoon of the mint syrup and 2 ounces of the bourbon, and stir until the outside of each glass is frosted.
