Welded wire meshes come in space sizes, such as 2 by 2, 3-by 3, 6 by 6 and 12 by 12. The wire sizes for the meshes have varied longitudinal cross sectional areas, such as 1.4, 2.1 and 2.9, measured in 1/100 of a square inch.

A typical wire mesh size designation has both the space size and cross sectional area parts. A 4 by 4 W4.0/4.0 welded wire mesh, for instance, is a designated wire size. The 4 by 4 represents the horizontal and vertical spaces between the strands in inches, while the W4.0/4.0 is the transverse cross sectional area of the wire measured in 1/100 of a square inch.
