Small, itchy bumps on the skin can be either keratosis pilaris or folliculitis, according to Mayo Clinic. It is not always necessary to see a doctor about this condition unless it is severe.
Keratosis pilaris occurs from a buildup of the protein keratin over the hair follicles on the skin. It is not known why the keratin builds up, but laser therapy and topical creams have been shown to be effective treatments, according to Mayo Clinic. Folliculitis is characterized as either superficial or deep, and it is caused by the infection of the hair follicles. If it is deep, it should be treated to avoid the further spreading of the infection.
