Keratosis pilaris is a skin condition characterized by small, painless white or red bumps and dry skin. Keratosis pilaris often worsens in the winter, according to Mayo Clinic.
Keratosis pilaris is caused by a build-up of keratin. The keratin plug blocks the hair follicle, causing a small
bump. It is more common in people with dry skin, reports WebMD.
There is no specific treatment for keratosis pilaris. However, topical exfoliants, topical retinoids and laser therapy can be used to exfoliate the skin and help with redness and inflammation, according to Mayo Clinic. Patients may also benefit from using an in-home humidifier or heavy moisturizer to keep their skin from drying out, notes WebMD.
