The Snake River begins in Yellowstone National Park in the state of Wyoming and joins the Columbia River, the largest river in the Pacific Northwest, near Pasco, Wash. The Snake River is the Columbia River's largest tributary. It is approximately 1,040 miles long.
The Snake River has a total drainage area of about 109,000 square miles and flows through the states of Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. The depth of the Snake River ranges from about 3 feet to more than 100 feet. The Snake River got its name from the Native American tribe called the Snake Indians, now known as the Shoshone. The river flowed through the land of this tribe.
