What is a snake robot?

A snake robot, also known as a snakebot, is a biomorphic robot that resembles a snake. These devices come in a number of sizes, shapes and lengths. They are extremely versatile, and are able to perform tasks that go beyond merely crawling and climbing.

The utility of snake robots lies in their ability to conduct automated operations within confined and other difficult-to-navigate spaces that humans and larger robots cannot easily access. They have numerous applications, such as search and rescue, underwater excavation, medical research and spying. They are also helpful for exploration in hazardous environments, such as under water, radioactive enclosures and toxic or corrosive fluids.
