What do snowshoe hares eat?

Snowshoe hares eat a wide variety of flowers, grasses and small leafy plants. They also eat the new growth of willows, aspen and birches and will scrounge for the bark, twigs and buds of evergreen trees during winter. Snowshoe hares even consume their own feces because it is required in order for them to absorb all the essential nutrients from the food they eat.

Some of the most common habitats where snowshoe hares live are swamps, fence rows, cedar bogs and exposed fields. They can be found living in these habitats throughout the northern United States and all over Canada. Most snowshoe hares do not survive for more than 1 year in their natural habitat, but some can actually live for as long as 5 years.
