What are some of the sounds that a snowy owl makes?
By Forinfos - 19/10/2025 - 0 comments
Snowy owls of both sexes utter low, raspy hoots. They are often uttered two at a time but can be made up to six times in a row. These hoots are audible up to 7 miles away on the tundra and are sometimes answered by other owls.
Snowy owls rarely make noise outside of breeding season, when males emit a loud hoo-hoo sound as a mating call and to advise others of territorial boundaries. They also make barking sounds, cackles and shrieks. They snap their bills when agitated, making a clacking sound. Chicks under 2 weeks of age cheep but hiss and squeal as they get older.
