What are Spode Copeland marks?

Spode and Copeland are names used to identify the maker of certain English china and earthenware dated through the mid-1880s into the 1900s. The name Copeland was added to the mark after Joseph Spode, owner of the original Spode factory, sold to William Copeland and Thomas Garrett in 1833.

The names were used together as Spode Copeland on standard earthenware produced from 1875 to 1890. There were variations of the mark used through this time period, including Copeland Spode, Copeland, and Slade & Spode. The names of Spode and Copeland also identified fine porcelain from 1891 into the 1900s, when the mark was printed, sometimes in gold, as Spode Copeland China England.
