The NFL does not historically track the average score of each Super Bowl quarter. However, in examining the box scores of contests played from 2011 to 2015, the average scores were 6.8 to 1.4, 9.6 to 7.6, 9.4 to 5.8 and 6.2 to 5.6 in the first through fourth quarters.
On average, teams representing the NFC outscored the AFC rivals in the first, third and fourth quarters, outscoring them by a combined score of 150-112 in winning three of the five contests.
The opening quarter on average was easily the lowest-scoring, in which the AFC was held scoreless in four of the five games played, and both teams held without a point in the 2015 contest.
