As of 2014, the largest bluefin tuna ever caught measured 13 feet and weighed 1,496 pounds. The fish was caught by Ken Fraser on Oct. 26, 1979 off the coast of Nova Scotia.
The largest of the tunas, the bluefin is distinguishable from most other types by its shorter pectoral fins. The fish is most commonly found in the temperate to subtropical waters of the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans, and the Black and Mediterranean Seas. The migratory patterns of the bluefin tuna are attributed to the seasonal movements of the fish on which it feeds, its spawning habits and water temperature.
