Why did Kobe Bryant change his number to 24?

Basketball star Kobe Bryant changed his number to 24 to honor the digit he wore when he began his career at Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania. The change took effect at the start of the 2006-2007 NBA season.
Bryant switched to the number 33 his father wore by his senior year of high school. When he was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996, the number was already retired by the team in tribute to Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Bryant then chose 8, the number he wore as a youth in Italy, which also coincided with the sum of "143," the number Bryant wore at Adidas ABCD Camp in high school. Bryant kept the number through the 2005-2006 season.
