When is the high season for catching stone crab?

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, stone crab season lasts from October 15 to May 15 of each year. Stone crabs harvested off the coast of Florida are either of the species Menippe mercenaria or Menippe adina.

According to Florida law, stone crab harvesters may only catch stone crabs with claws measuring more than 2 3/4 inches in length. In addition, harvesters can only catch 1 gallon of claws per person per day, or 2 gallons per vessel (the lesser amount applies).

It is legal to harvest both claws of the snow crab. However, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission discourages this practice as it leaves the stone crab without a way to defend itself from predators.
