The exact time period that a squirrel mates vary, depending on location and the specific breed of the squirrel. However, the majority of squirrels mate either during late winter and early spring months. Weather conditions of a certain location also affect the mating period of squirrels.
Squirrels generally give birth during the late spring months. The babies are born without fur, and are also blind at birth. The mother squirrel keeps them in a nesting area, until they reach between eight and 10 weeks old, at which time they are able to leave the nest on their own. Unlike some animals, squirrels do not mate for life.
