When was St. Augustine canonized as a saint?

Saint Augustine, or Augustine of Hippo, was born in 354 and by the time of his death, he was canonized in the informal manner in which saints were canonized at the time. In 1298 Pope Boniface VIII recognized him as a Doctor of the Church.

At the time of Saint Augustine, saints were canonized by the popular acclaim of the Catholic people and the ratification of the local bishop. It was not until the 11th century that Rome began to play a significant role in beatification and canonization. Saint Augustine's feast day is August 28, the day on which he died.
