To stain wood floors, choose a stain color, test it on a section of the floor, remove the furniture, sand the floor, and sweep up the sawdust. Apply the stain and polyurethane, allowing ample drying time between applications. This process takes a day to complete. You need wood stain, polyurethane, a rag or applicator, a sander, and a broom.
- Choose a color
Select a shade of wood stain to match the room. Stain a small section of the floor to test the color, and allow the stain it to dry.
- Prepare the room
Remove all furniture from the room so the floor is accessible. Sand the floor thoroughly, and sweep up all of the sawdust.
- Apply the stain
Use an applicator or rag to apply the wood stain to the floor. Keep the stain as even as possible. Watch for drips, and avoid letting the stain form pools. Check the manufacturer's instructions for how long to allow the wood stain to dry.
- Protect the floor
After the stain has dried completely, apply a layer of polyurethane to the floor to protect the wood.
- Replace the furniture
Give the polyurethane plenty of time to dry. Return the furniture to the room.
