What is a standalone computer system?

A standalone computer system refers to any laptop or desktop computer that can run local applications on its own without needing a connection to a wide area network (WAN) or a local area network (LAN). All the application programs required for general use are installed on the hard disk.
A standalone PC can be equipped with a scanner, printer or external hard disk. When they are not connected to a network, standalone computers cannot share resources. However, PCs that are not connected to a network generally offer a very secure computing environment free of hackers and viruses.
Standalone may also refer to applications that do not need any additional software aside from the operating system to run.
