How do you restore your computer system to an earlier date?

Restoring a computer to an earlier date requires the "System Restore" feature to be accessed and a date to be selected that contains a backup. Depending on the operating system of the computer, there are various ways to reach the "System Restore" feature.

Computers with the Windows Vista operating system must follow the instructions below to reach and perform a system restore. This method works for all versions of the Windows Vista operating system.

1. Start

Click "Start" and then type "System Restore" in the search box that pops up. After clicking "System Restore," an administrator password may be required. Confirm the password if prompted and then follow the on-screen prompts.

2. Select a restore point

The "System Restore" feature selects a date for recommendation, but it can be changed. If the date suggested is not desired, then click the box that says "Choose a different restore point." Select the date for a restore from the list that appears and click "Next" to continue.

3. Allow the process to complete

After all the screens have been checked and the process begins, allow it to finish before turning off the computer.

The instructions below work for computers with Windows 8.1 operating systems. There is no restore feature available for Windows RT 8.1.

1. Start

Swipe the screen at the right edge and tap "Search."

2. Go to the control panel

Type "Control Panel" into the search box and then tap "Control Panel."

3. Recovery

In the Control Panel search box, enter "Recovery" and then tap it to open.

4. System restore

Tap "Open System Restore" and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the process.
