Standard clothes closets are at least 24 inches deep. This allows clothes to hang from a rack without hitting the back wall of the closet.
Shelves for folded clothes should be 14 inches deep with widths of 12 inches for each stack of shirts or sweaters. At least 8 to 10 inches is needed between shelves vertically. A height of 84 inches is needed for hanging double rods. When calculating the length of rod space needed, allot 1 inch for shirts, 1 1/4 inches for pants or skirts and 2 to 3 inches for jackets. Very tall people may need more space allotted when designing a custom closet.
