The state fish of Hawaii is the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. It is also called the rectangular triggerfish or the Hawaiian triggerfish. The name translates from the Hawaiian language as "triggerfish with a snout like a pig."

In 1985, the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a fish was temporarily named the official fish of the state. It was only set to be the state fish for five years, as a trial basis. There was no action taken when the trial five years was over. In 2006, it was brought to the attention of the state that there was no official state fish. The Humuhumunukunukuapua'a was then reinstated as the state fish.
