A Southern magnolia bloom is the state flower of Mississippi. It was declared as Mississippi's state flower in 1952. The Southern magnolia is also known as Magnolia grandiflora.
A Southern magnolia has large, white saucer-like flowers that are very aromatic. The flowers of other magnolia species can be pink, green, yellow or purple. Magnolias have large, waxy green leaves with a shiny appearance. The trees bloom after their seventh year of growth, with flowers forming between April and June. They create a large amount of pollen. Magnolia blooms are singular and are found at the end of the tree's branches.
