Kansas City is in the state of Missouri in the American Midwest. The municipality spans four counties at the western border of Missouri. Downtown Kansas City is located near the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers.

Kansas City is often called the "Heart of America" because it is the closest major city to the geographic center of the United States. It is nicknamed the "City of Fountains" for the more than 200 fountains found throughout the city. Based on the 2010 census, Kansas City is the largest municipality in Missouri with a population of 459,787. It is famous for its distinct jazz musical style, its unique barbecue flavor and its Midwestern hospitality.
