Dodge City has been known as the Queen of Cowtowns, a nickname bestowed on the town thanks to its prominence within the American cattle industry during the late 1800s. After the Civil War, Western states became increasingly important in the production of beef cattle, and cities in Kansas, including Dodge City, became important railroad hubs for transporting cattle from Texas to states in the Northeast.

These rail hubs, known as cowtowns, were economic centers, which helped them grow in both size and economic importance. Dodge City was among the largest and busiest of these cowtowns, which explains its regal nickname.
