What is the state tree of Kansas?

The official state tree of Kansas is the Eastern Cottonwood. This deciduous tree is part of the poplar species and is native to the eastern half of North America. At heights of up to 130 feet, this tree is one of the largest hardwood trees in North America.

The cottonwood is a very fast-growing tree, with toothed leaves that are either triangular or diamond-shaped. The soft bark of the tree contains deep fissures, and the seeds are cottony, allowing them to float long distances on the wind. Moths and butterflies feed off of the cottonwood tree. This type of tree grows best in moist conditions and is often used as a shade tree.
