Kansas has three characteristic climates: humid continental, semi-arid steppe and humid subtropical. The eastern two-thirds of the state have a humid continental climate, with cool to cold winters and hot, humid summers. The western third of the state has a semiarid steppe climate.
Kansas experiences great extremes between summer and winter temperatures but few long periods of extreme hot or cold. The growing season ranges from mid-April to mid-September. Most of the precipitation falls in the summer and spring, meaning Kansas has relatively dry winters with not much snowfall. The annual average state-wide precipitation is slightly more than 25 inches.
