Topeka is the capital of Kansas. Founded in 1854 and incorporated in 1857, the city is located in Shawnee County in northeast Kansas. Kansas was admitted to the Union in 1861.

Construction on the state capitol in Topeka began in 1866. Also referred to as the Kansas Statehouse, it is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Topeka is the center of government for the state. It is known for the historical 1951 U.S. Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. This case struck down state laws that established racial segregation in schools. The case was important for the students of Topeka and the civil rights movement as a whole.
