What is the state motto of Tennessee?

Tennessee's state motto is “Agriculture and Commerce.” The motto was adopted officially by the General Assembly in 1987 and is one of the youngest state mottos in the United States.

The motto comes from the words written on the great seal of Tennessee that was created in 1801. The state seal of Tennessee represents the motto symbolically. A riverboat is used to symbolize commerce. Agriculture is symbolized by the tools used and by a main crop. A sheaf, plough and stalk of cotton all appear on the state seal. Some other mottos that are used for Tennessee are: “America at Its Best,” "Follow Me to Tennessee,” and “Sounds Good to Me.”
