Mitt Romney served one term as the Republican governor of Massachusetts beginning in 2003, but he did not run for re-election. During his tenure, the state reduced its $3 billion deficit and adopted massive health care reform for its citizens.

The political career of Mitt Romney, the son of former Michigan governor George Romney, includes an unsuccessful bid for the office of U.S. Senator from Massachusetts in 1994 against Edward Kennedy, and back-to-back campaigns for the U.S. presidency in 2008 and 2012. In 2008, his bid for the Republican nomination ultimately fell to Senator John McCain. In 2012, he received his party's nomination before losing to President Barack Obama in the general election.
